Member of a Plains American Indian people,
some 10,000 in number and consisting of three
subtribes: the Blackfoot proper, the Blood,
and the Piegan, who live in Montana, USA, and
Saskatchewan and Alberta, Canada. They were
skilled, horse-riding buffalo hunters until
their territories were settled by Europeans.
Their name derives from their black
moccasins. Their language belongs to the
Algonquian family.
